“This is quite a varied programme of music that we have for you in this concert, including a new work which we commissioned Peter Aviss to write for us, making this its premiere performance. Peter has given this the title of ‘Searching’ and in the score, Peter has written a programme note, extracts from which are: “Searching for what? … I like to think that most music is telling a story or taking you on a journey … Will we know the answer when we get there? … The end illuminates the way forward!”   We feel sure you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed playing it.

We do hope that the title of Mussorgsky’s 4 songs will not put you off. This arrangement has been written by Rupert Bond to accommodate the bass voice of our notable soloist, Thomas Lowen, who started singing at the age of 8 as a Canterbury Cathedral chorister. Tom will be singing these songs, as they were written, in Russian.

We end the concert with Schumann’s lovely ‘Rhenish’ Symphony, the last symphony composed by Schumann, although not the last published.”
