The sextet is formed of six close friends and colleagues who have played together for many years in various chamber groups, ensembles and orchestras. These include Britten Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, Glyndebourne and Garsington Opera, Guildhall Strings, The Royal Philharmonic orchestra and The Kreisler String Orchestra. Their professional careers have included extensive international touring, frequent broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and a large archive of classical recordings. Alongside their classical performances, they have recorded film soundtracks (Harry Potter & James Bond), as well as working with artists such as Madonna, Bjork and Sting.

Kath Shave (leader) has appeared at The Green Room in recent times with The Kentish Piano Trio and the other members of the sextet are making their debut in this wonderful chamber music setting.

Johannes Brahms  (1833- 1897) lived a solitary life that included periods of sadness and unhappiness. However, in his late 20s, he entered a hopeful and optimistic episode when work was fulfilling, varied and profitable. During this time, he felt that he was beginning to find his musical voice,  “I am pleased with my things,” he wrote. “You know, I think I’m growing!”

String sextets were relatively uncommon at the time with Boccherini being the most well-known composer for this combination of instruments. In Brahms’ sextets, each voice is independent and has its own unique contribution. The extra viola and cello add a richness and sonority to the well-established and popular medium of the string quartet.
