“The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea & Prosperous Voyage Overture, the first performance of which was conducted by Mendelssohn himself in Berlin in December 1832.  Michael Lewis’ excellent programme notes describe how Mendelssohn became good friends with the great German poet Goethe, inspiring him to write this composition (as well as others) from two of his poems ‘Calm at Sea’ & ‘Prosperous Voyage’. Michael has written both poems out in the concert programme, in order to understand how Mendelssohn has transformed these into the corresponding music which you’ll hear.

Our Soloist for Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto is Amit Yahav, who is no stranger to Folkestone, having performed a number of times with us in the past. Amit is a multi-award winning pianist who is “much in demand as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist, having earned his reputation for interpretations that grip and move audiences with passion and intellectual insight.”  Amit informs me that he is very excited about this, as the Emperor is one of his favourite concerti! … Like many of us I’m sure ….

Closing the programme will be Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No.5. The second World War interrupted Vaughan Williams work on the symphony which was eventually completed in 1943. He dedicated the work to Jean Sibelius for whose work he had the greatest admiration. The first performance of this symphony was conducted by Vaughan Williams, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the 1943 Prom Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.”
