Overview:
As part of the Sacconi Residency Weekend, artist Kate Beaugié has been invited to collaborate for one of the events.
Kate interpreted this as an opportunity to re-contextualise the listening experience of classical music. Using the acoustic nature of the medium of the quartet to its advantage by relocating the quartet out of the concert space and placing them directly into the forces of nature.
Artist’s Biography – Kate Beaugié
Since graduating Glasgow School of Art in 2000, where she became finely attuned to the intense light and darkness of Scotland’s particular latitude and intrigued by the phenomena found in water as witnessed in the still lochs, Kate has been developing her professional art practise as a light sculptor of natural phenomena.
She has artworks in three public collections, including the VAULT 100 at The Ned, London, curated by Kate Bryan, which “includes 92 art works by leading female British artists”[1]. She has exhibited nationally and has achieved two Arts Council England grants to develop her art practise.
Kate started collaborating with musicians in Glasgow and has developed a practise of combining music with light & water installations. Her most recent ‘Music & Light Symbiotic’ event, Applied Pure, was held in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford in 2019, where she combined an hour long harpsichord concert played by Medea Bindewald (including the music of JS Bach) with live water projections in a full maths lecture theatre.

For the collaboration with the Sacconi Quartet, she is placing the concert under the arches at Sunny Sands, harnessing the unique acoustics of the space and using the natural environment as the stage set and the elements as the lighting and additional sound. She is interested in focusing on the subject of time; taken by the music, by sensing the encroaching tide and by watching the turning of the Earth indicated by the moving shadows of the arches over the Sacconi Quartet as they play the sublime Op. 131 by Beethoven.
