Sacconi Festival 2017

2017 was the 10th Sacconi Festival. The opening concert included Philip Glass’s 2nd String Quartet, a tribute to the composer celebrating his 80th birthday that year. It also included one of the Sacconis’ all-time favourite quartets: Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’. The Sacconis were joined for the Saturday night concert by the renowned Wihan Quartet from the Czech Republic in an exhilarating concert of the Enescu, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn Octets.

In the late-night concert at the Quarterhouse, the extraordinary Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer performed in her unique musical style. Having worked closely and performed with Philip Glass, and produced two CDs of his music arranged for harp, Lavinia is an expert interpreter of his work. She also performed a piece written for her by Paul Patterson, a great friend of the Sacconis and one of the foremost contemporary composers for the harp.

For the finale concert, the wonderful pianist Alasdair Beatson joined the Sacconi Quartet in performances of another seminal piece by Schubert: The ‘Trout’ quintet, in Beethoven’s beautiful Archduke Piano Trio and again for Dvorak’s piano quintet masterpiece, chosen by our very own Sacconi Friends.
